Shekau and his armed group were surrounded by fighters from the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Wednesday, May 20, 2021.
Following which he tried killing himself to avoid being capture.
Intelligence claims that he used either a gun or a grenade or a suicide belt to take his own life.
However, there has been no confirmation until now.

He is formally known as the Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad.
Shekau first served as deputy leader alongside the group founder Mohammed Yusuf, who was executed in 2009.
He became global after Kidnapping 300 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State. Over 100 of the females remain missing to this day.
