Netflix’s drama series Cable Girls focuses on the lives of 4 women in 1920’s Madrid. The women become friends over the course of their job at a cable (telecommunications) company. 

The show portrays the struggle of women to gain independence and move forward personally and professionally in a predominantly male-centric era.

When Is The Release Date Of The Season 5 Of The Show?

Unlike traditional shows, Cable Girls or Las chicas del cable in Spanish released the season 5 in two parts. 

The first part of the 5th season was released on 14th February 2020 and the second part (final part) will be released on the 3rd of July 2020.

The show’s first season premiered on April 28, 2017.

The Spanish Show Features A Seasoned Cast

Cable Girls features a cast consisting of well-known names in Spanish TV series.

The lead characters are portrayed by excellent actors. Blanca Suárez depicts Lidia Aguilar Dávila aka Alba Romero Méndez) who is the first of the central characters to move the plot. 

Similarly, Nadia de Santiago plays Maria Inmaculada Suárez Pazos. Some of the actress’s other works include The Dark Hour (2007), Life and Colour (2005), etc.Carlota Rodríguez de Senillosa is depicted by Ana Fernández who has been part of the main cast from season 1 to the 1st part of the 5th season.

Yon González who plays Francisco Gómez and Ana Polvorosa who depicts Oscar Ruiz (Sara Millán) are also part of the main ensemble. 

Similarly, actors Denisse Peña, Raúl Merida, Miguel Diosdado, Alex Hafner, etc have also been given main roles starting from the 5th season. Some recurring actors on the show include Simón Andreu, Joan Crosas, Luisa Gavasa, etc. 

Plot Summary 

The first season of the show kicks off as Alba dreams of leaving her old life behind and starting fresh with a new identity. To escape her past and have the murder charges which have been wrongfully placed on her she must help a corrupt cop. 

After this, she struggles with various obstacles as she tries to break free from the cycle of crime. Towards the end of the first season, Lidia’s true identity as Alba is revealed to Carlos.

After the events of the premiere season, the plot thickens as blackmail and dirty politics are thrown into the mix. As the series progresses, the real-world problems of the period (the late 1920s) are put into context within the show. The women struggle with misogyny and a lot of other obstacles.

Spain, as well as, the whole world is trying to recover from the ravaging first world war and things are still not normal, the economy is also suffering greatly.

The first part of the fifth season takes place during the Spanish civil war (17 July 1936 – 1 April 1939). By this time, Lidia and Francisco are in a relationship in the USA, but Lidia returns to help in the Spanish civil war.

Reviews, Ratings And Reception 

Cable Girls has managed to gather decent ratings from all over the globe while also becoming a popular show among audiences.

Overall IMDb rates the show a 7.7/10. In similar fashion, the site rated each episode of the first part of the 5th season more than 7/10. 

Rotten Tomatoes has rated Cable Girls, 88% (as of July 2020). The final season has not yet been rated on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season of the show gathered a perfect 100% on the site.

Acclaimed critic Margaret Lyons, said the series was a perfect show for people who like period pieces on her NY Times review.
