SF Chronicle reveals that Gensler was a long-time battler of lung disease. As a matter of fact, he was battling lung disease for the last 18 months and passed away in his sleep.
His son David shared with SF Chronicle, “He had a real passion for San Francisco and the Bay Area. My dad was a regular guy, respectful and friendly, and never pompous. He loved serving clients through the power of design.”

Gensler was married to his wife, Drue Cortrell.
The couple enjoyed their conjugal life since 1957 when they tied their marital knots. Moreover, Gensler and his wife shared four sons named David, Douglas, Robert, and Kenneth.
Prior to that, his son David was a co-CEO at his company Gensler. His son Douglas is an architect and co-managing director for Gensler’s office. Robert is a golf professional and Kenneth is an airline pilot.
