The Business of Drugs Netflix Docuseries: Cast, Host, and Release Date

Netflix is pushing the mini-series ‘The Business of Drugs’ which is a series based on the real-life exploits of a former CIA analyst. The series show the nitty and gritty of the drug trade in the world. 

It is one of the most alluring documentaries of recent times. Due to the presence of the former CIA member in the show, it provides a unique perspective on the drug trade, one that is filled with inside information.

Release Date

Netflix will release the documentary, ‘The Business of Drugs’ on July 14, 2020. 

Plot

Damerell Thornbe aka Amaryllis Fox hosts the show which dives deep into the business of cocaine, heroin, synthetics, meth, cannabis, and opioids and how it is traded within the community. 

The show’s main focus lies on the financial side of the drug trade and how it affects the economy. The series depicts how expensive it is to keep drugs off the streets. 

It has been decades since the USA declared the war on drugs and the federal government has been spending huge amounts of money to control and prohibit drugs.  

The host shows how the chilling economies of the drug trade, the show also tries to show the ones who run the business from the shadow. 

Fox’s exploits take her into different places, like the jungles of Myanmar, Colombia among others. 

She not only covers the dark illegal trade of drugs but also the newly legal marijuana trade that is prospering all around the globe.

Amaryllis Fox aka Damerell Thornbe is the host of the show, she is a former CIA operative who is famous as one of the youngest officers to be ever recruited into the CIA at just 22 years of age. 

She has a Master’s degree in conflict and terrorism at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. While working on her degree at the uni, she developed a way to calculate where terrorist havens may be. 

Fox is one of the best-known CIA operatives in the world, she gained international fame for her Al Jazeera interview where she said that the biggest lesson she learned as a CIA officer was to listen to the enemy. 

The host has had an interesting life, she worked as a CIA agent until 2010 and was sent to prison for interviewing Aung San Suu Kyi, when she was just 18 years old. 

Similarly, she went viral after an interview where she frankly spoke about her time in the CIA. 

Amaryllis also tried to publish a book about her exploits as a spy without the approval of the agency. 

The book, “Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA”, caused a lot of controversies especially from the agency professionals who said that the book was unsafe to publish.  

Her book was so interesting that Apple came and bought the Tv rights to them even before it was published. 

One of the exploits she has written about in her book was the time she posed as an art dealer in Shanghai and tried to infiltrate the top brass of China. 

This was all done to help the CIA get intel on nuclear weapons procurement networks in Europe and the Middle East. As per an NBC news report, she goes into great depth to describe her experience as a spy working for the CIA. 

Ratings And Review 

There have not been any official ratings of the show however, some critics have already touted the show as an impactful documentary. 

Similarly, many other outlets have also called the show provocative and investigative.
