Lorraine Toussaint is a Trinidadian-American actress and producer from Trinidad and Tobago. Her mother brought her to live in Brooklyn in the late 1960s. She graduated from Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts in 1978. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Juilliard.

Toussaint grew up under the British system, which she thinks is very strict and horrific for children. A system that did not acknowledge children as being individuals.

In an interview, the actor said, “You were small animals earning the right to be human. Childhood for me then felt extraordinarily powerless, and as an artistic child who learned in different ways, it was hell. I was beaten regularly. An obedient child was a fearful child. I was a very good little girl, which meant I lived in a world of silent, dark nightmares most of the time.”

Career

Lorraine Toussaint then began her career as a Shakespearean actress before venturing into screen acting in television and film. She began her career in theatre before supporting performances in films, including (1986), Breaking In (1989), Hudson Hawk (1991), and Dangerous Minds (1995).

As lead actress, she is best known for her role as Rene Jackson in the firmly acclaimed television drama series Any Day Now (1998-2002). She had a recurring role as defense attorney Shambala Green in the legal drama Law & Order from 1990 to 2003.

Lorraine Toussaint received critical acclaim and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance in Middle of Nowhere. She played the role of the major enemy in the second season of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black (2014). For the series, she received critical acclaim and a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series 2015.

In 2020, she won the Chlotrudis Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the drama film Fast Color. Toussaint later played the role of Amelia Boynton Robinson in Ava DuVernay’s 2014 historical drama film Selma.

She later co-starred in Forever (2014–15), Rosewood (2015–17), and Into the Badlands (2018–19). She starred in the 2019 horror film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, as Louise.
