Ricki Lake is an outstanding American actress, television presenter, and producer. She is best known for her lead role as Tracy Turnblad in the film Hairspray (1988). She received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead, for her performance in the film.
Lake is also best recognized for her talk show, Ricki Lake, which was televised internationally from September 1993 until May 2004. When the show got out, she was 24 and credited as being the youngest person to host a syndicated talk show. In 2012, she began hosting a second syndicated talk show, The Ricki Lake Show. However, the series got canceled in 2013 after a single season, but Lake won her first Daytime Emmy Award for the project.
She was born to a secular Jewish family, the daughter of Jill and Barry Lake. Her paternal grandmother, Sylvia Lake, brought her until Sylvia’s death in 1978. She studied at Ithaca College for 12 months.
Career
Ricki Lake also starred in other Waters films, including Cry-Baby (1990) with Johnny Depp, Cecil B. Demented (2000) with Melanie Griffith, and Serial Mom (1994) with Kathleen Turner. She starred in Mrs. Winterbourne (1996), Cabin Boy (1994), Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989), Cookie (1989), and Inside Monkey Zetterland (1992).
She joined the cast of the Vietnam War drama series China Beach (TV series, 1988) as a Red Cross volunteer. From 1998 to 2007, she also had a recurring role on the sitcom The King of Queens as Doug’s sister Stephanie. She guest-starred on television series including Drop Dead Diva (2009) and a voice role on King of the Hill (1997).
Ricki Lake then starred in the television movie Baby Cakes (1989) as Grace. She had a cameo appearance in the remake of the original cult-classic Hairspray (2007) as a William Morris talent agent.
