Tru Collins is a well-known American actress and indie-pop singer. She is best known for her role as Julie on MTV’s original high school comedy, Awkward from 2011 to 2016. She studied at Manhattan’s Professional Performing Arts School when she was 15.
Tru studied classical piano and trained with Elaine Kudo of American Ballet Theatre. She attended college with a songwriting scholarship from Universal and attended New York University and The New School in NYC.
Career
In 2014, Tru Collins guest-starred on the period drama Masters of Sex (TV series) opposite Michael Sheen and had a supporting role in Spring Awakening, an indie film set in the recent 1800s. She has recurred as mean girl Julie on MTV’s Awkward from the second season to fifth. She then featured along with Hayley Kiyoko in a TV series called Insecure (2017) and acted in another TV series, Vida (2018).
As a singer, Tru performed with Grammy-winning soul singer Latrice Verrett, opening for Aretha Franklin at the Nokia Theatre Times Square in 2009. In 2010, she joined Atlantic Records’ multi-platinum rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra as a vocalist.
She toured arenas across North America and supported the band performing acoustic guitar/vocal solos live on many rock radio stations. Also in 2010, TSO reached #12 on the Billboard charts for American Arena Tours, hitting Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. The tour earned $47,395,108 and sold out 51 arenas.
Tru Collins has co-written songs with quite famous personalities including Rostrum Records artist Vali and Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J. Her work has appeared on various recordings and television soundtracks. She released her debut solo extended play called Story of A Gypsy Child (2015) and her MV, for the first single called Party Dress.
