The Atlanta Child Murder Victims Nathaniel Cater And Jimmy Ray Payne were both grown men, unlike other victims who were mostly children and teenagers.
Wayne Bertram Williams has been spending his prison sentence since January 1984 on the charge of being the serial killer of at least 28 children in Atlanta, Georgia back in 1979-1981. The Atlanta Child Murder or Atlanta murders of 1979–1981, shook the entire nation and caused panic in the state.
The mysterious story about this Atlanta Child Murder case is also profiled in many crime docuseries on CNN and Netflix. The recent one was shown in the HBO series “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children” which was released in April 2020.
Although Wayne Williams was prosecuted for being the murderer of two of the deaths viz., Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne, it is still not proved that he killed other children. The case got closed completely.
But since it was proved in court that Williams, 24 at that time, had murdered these two victims, here is everything we know about these innocent adult victims who died in Atlanta murders of 1979-1981.
Who Are Nathaniel Cater And Jimmy Ray Payne?
Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne are the two of the victims whose death was connected to the serial killer Wayne Williams.
Investigation on these two deaths ultimately led to the trial and conviction of the murderer Wayne Williams. He was also attributed to the other 28 deaths that occurred during that 2 year period of time and the case was closed. It is still unclear whether or not he was involved in other deaths of Black male children of Atlanta, Georgia.
Nathaniel Cater was a black Atlanta resident who disappeared on May 22, 1981, and was later found dead.
He was 27 years old at that time. Nathaniel was last seen at the entrance of Rialto Theatre in Atlanta in the evening by a gardener named Robert Henry. Robert also mentioned that Cater was seen holding hands with Wayne Williams.
His body was discovered just a few hours later after that. The cause of his death was Asphyxiation and his nude dead body was found floating down the river a few miles from the bridge where police officers on stakeout heard the splash while Williams was trying to dispose of the body.
Jimmy Ray Payne
Similarly, Jimmy Ray Payne was also another adult victim of the Atlanta Child Murders. Jimmy was just 21 years old at the time of his death.
Jimmy was an ex-convicted criminal who was serving time in prison for burglary charges and had just recently been released from the Arrendale State Prison. Jimmy’s dead body was found in April 1981. He was disappeared from 23rd April 1981. Much like Nathaniel Carter, Jimmy Payne’s cause of death was also asphyxiation.
Why did Wayne Williams murder these people?
Wayne Williams was a pop-music producer, photographer, and manager.
He was arrested for the murder of Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne but there are no proofs that support the claim that Wayne had murdered all the other victims of Atlanta Child murder case. However, after Wayne Williams was convicted, the incessant killing happening in Atlanta in the early 1980s stopped.
Some witnesses believed that Wayne Williams had solicited sexual favors from the victims. He was a psychotic serial killer and murdered the victims with no particular motive.
His targetted victims were generally Black children and young adult men in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. He is also named as Atlanta monster and Atlanta Boogeyman because of his crimes.
This Atlanta Monster is currently 62 years old and is serving his punishment of life imprisonment in Telfair State Prison.
