Stephen Lawrence’s parents have been high on the search list these days. Learn about the case that changed Britain.

Lawrence was a black British teenager who was killed by white racists on April 22, 1993, while he was on his way home. 

He and his friend, Duwayne Brooks were waiting for a bus on Well Hall road when a group of 5 or 6 white teenagers came and stabbed Stephan to death. 

Today marks the 28th anniversary of his death. 

Stephen Lawrence Parents and Family

Stephan Lawrence was born to an African background family and his parents were Neville Lawrence And Doreen Lawrence. 

They had gotten married in the year 1972 and had 3 children: Stephan, Stuart, and Georgina, among whom Stephan was the oldest. 

After his death, their parents fought for justice countless times, and through the countless campaign, reforms were made in the police department as the MET were found institutionally racist. 

But despite their success, Stephan’s death had torn them apart and they got divorced in 1999.

Both of them went on to become activists, his mother was awarded the OBE award and was appointed baroness, making her one of the most influential woman figures in Britain. 

She also became the new Chancellor of De Montfort University, Leicester in 2016 and founded a charitable trust in her Stephan’s name.

His father went back to Jamaica and was appointed the head of a new group holding the police to account for knife crime.

He is also serving as the chair of the community reference group.

Stephen Lawrence Case Updated

After 18 years of Stephan Lawrence’s case, justice was served.

On January 3, 2012, murderers Gary Dobson and David Norris were found guilty and were sentenced to detention at Her Majesty’s Pleasure with a minimum term of 15 and 14 years respectively.

April 22, the day of his death, is now regarded as the Stephan Lawrence day.
