Thank you for all the incredibly kind birthday wishes. It has been a difficult year for everyone, and I needed a few days of reflection offline to realize there is still a ton of love out there in the world. For that, I am grateful. This is how I spent my birthday: I put a small camping chair on my paddleboard, drifted out into the middle of a secluded lake, and tied myself to a deadhead where I sat alone until the sun went down, reading a fresh book and sipping from a 2L thermos full of very weak, jalapeño and lime-infused vodka soda. A family of loons lingered close by, serenading me with their haunting calls, while two million migrating tadpoles swirled in the water below. Mating dragonflies occasionally attached themselves to my leg after dancing along the warm, summer breeze and a black bear swam right past me to the other side of the lake. I took it all in with my eyes rather than a camera and it felt liberating. The book I chose detailed Paul Souders’ journeys to the Canadian North in pursuit of the perfect polar bear picture. It was a great read, but, most importantly, it helped me dive deep down memory lane and inspired me to write a book of my own someday. In life, we get so busy charging ahead that, often, we fail to press pause, look backwards, and remember all of the incredible things we have done and seen. Allow me a few years, and I should have something ready – whether it will be any good is yet to be seen but I can’t wait to share it with you.
