“Lovecraft Country” is an upcoming series on HBO based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff and it is a fantastic mix of drama and horror. 

HBO’s horror series “Lovecraft Country” created by Meesha Green and directed/ produced by J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peel, combines the racial era and paranormal activity involving monsters based on the overwhelming whiteness of American weird fiction with Black heroes while unfolding an ancient mystery.

Imagine going on a blissful road trip minding your own business and you reach a town but then it gets dark and horrific from there because you cannot stop at the place where you reached, which is called the “Lovecraft Country”.

The series is already interesting enough because of the popularity of the novel it is based on and the reputation of the creators. Here is everything we know about this upcoming series “Lovecraft Country”.

Lovecraft Country Release Date

‘Lovecraft Country’ is going to be released exclusively on HBO starting from August 16, 2020, at 10 p.m. ET. The series consists of 10 episodes and each of them would be streaming with a weekly interval until 18th October 2020.

HBO has already released two official teasers of this historical horror fiction Lovecraft country.

The first one was released in May which gives a slight introduction to the plot of the series.

The latest teaser released in June is much more sophisticated which tries to show the weird fiction influences of the show. You can watch it here.

Basically, the series seems interestingly dark, weird, and horrifying. Some may even say that it looks like Civil Rights Movement met Stranger Things.

Lovecraft Country Cast

The Lovecraft Country is filled with spectacular casts, especially people of color. The breakdown o the major casts of the series is given below.

  • Jonathan Majors as Atticus Freeman, a Korean War US military veteran and a science-fiction nerd who is in search of his father in Massachusetts.
  • Jurnee Smollett as ‘Leti’ Letitia Lewis, Atticus’ childhood friend.
  • Courtney B. Vance as George Black, Atticus’ warm, funny and well-read uncle.
  • Abbey Lee as Christina Braithwhite, the only daughter of the leader of the secret order “Sons of Adam”
  • Aunjanue Ellis as Hippolyta Freeman, Atticus Freeman’s aunt and a star-gazer with a knack for adventure
  • Wunmi Mosaku as Ruby Baptiste, Leti’s half-sister
  • Michael Kenneth Williams as Monrose Freeman, Atticus Freeman’s secretive father
  • Jamie Harris as Eustace Hunt, the country sheriff.

Apart from these actors, there are several talented actors playing recurring roles in the series. They are Jordan Patrick Smith, Tony Goldwin, Jamie Chung, Erica Tazel, Mac Brandt, and many more.

Lovecraft Country Plot explained 

Lovecraft Country follows the story in the 1950s about a young black man named Atticus Freeman who is a science-fiction nerd and a US veteran. Atticus is on a road trip from Chicago across Jim Crow America with his childhood friend Leti and his uncle George in search of his missing father. 

His father was disappeared mysteriously a while back from a town in Massachusetts which they call “Lovecraft country”. On their journey in search of Atticus’ father, they face and overcome the struggles of racist terrors of White America along with the terrifying monsters and come across some really weird ancient story.

Although some parts of the story overlap with the historical events of the country back in the 1950s when racial discrimination was highly prevalent, the series is fully fictional and none of this has ever happened in real life.

With a boasting 4.5 stars on Amazon of the book Lovecraft Country, the series is expected to be as good as the novel.
